One of the most common short-term rehab patients at Luxor Nursing and Rehabilitation at Mills Pond is someone who recently suffered a stroke.
Around 800,000 people in the United States suffer a stroke each year, making it one of the leading causes of long-term adult disability. However, with prompt treatment, recovery, and rehabilitation, improved functioning and even complete recoveries are possible for someone who has a stroke.
The goal for every one of our short-term rehabilitation patients is for them to return home to the life that they previously lived. We want the stroke survivor to leave us as independent as possible.
What Do Stroke Rehab Patients Do?
Here are some of the strategies we utilize to help stroke victims regain as much of their life skills as possible.
- Mobility Skills. This includes walking, balance, operating a wheelchair and transferring from one place to another.
- Self-Care Skills: Some patients need to re-learn how to eat, bathe, groom, and dress themselves.
- Cognitive Skills: Strokes can affect memory and problem-solving abilities.
- Communication Skills: Many times, speaking abilities and language are greatly affected by a stroke. We not only try to restore communication, but we work on new ways to communicate if necessary.
- Social Skills: Sometimes strokes change the emotional make-up of a person, so we work on how to interact with other people, along with ways to cope for new challenges that the stroke may have brought on.
When Can Stroke Victims Enter Rehabilitation?
Rehab will be ordered by a doctor, usually when he or she determines that the patient is medically stable and is at a point in their recovery where they will benefit from rehab.
