Luxor Nursing and Rehab at Mills Pond on Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Coronavirus

The prospect of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) spreading across the United States and the world can be a scary thing for seniors, since the disease has shown to cause sometimes fatal breathing issues for the elderly and those with compromised immune systems.

In times like these, being armed with information is vital in order to protect ourselves as best as we can.

With that in mind, Luxor Nursing and Rehab at Mills Pond wants to answer some frequently asked questions regarding the coronavirus, courtesy of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)

How Does the Virus Spread?

The first infections were linked to a live animal market in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China, but is now spreading person-to-person. There remain questions as to whether an asymptomatic person (someone not showing any symptoms) can spread the disease to others. An “actively sick” person can spread the disease by coughing or sneezing. Those germs can settle on a person close by or on objects like countertops and handrails.

Why Are People Being Quarantined?

The incubation period for this coronavirus can be anywhere from two to 14 days, so suspected cases are being isolated for two weeks until it’s clear that they won’t show signs of the disease.

Can Coronavirus Be Spread Through Food?

The CDC says there is currently no evidence that the virus can be transmitted through food. However, people who prepare food can certainly spread it, so it’s imperative that you wash your hands before handling or preparing food.

How Can I Help Protect Myself?

Taking simple measures like washing your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds, using hand sanitizer with at least 60-percent alcohol, and not touching your face can go along way in keeping you healthy.

Should I Wear a Facemask?

The CDC does not recommend that healthy people wear a facemask to protect themselves from any respiratory illness. People who are showing symptoms of COVID-19 should wear a mask, as should healthcare workers and people who are taking care of someone infected with the virus.

What Are the Symptoms?

Current symptoms of the novel coronavirus are fever, cough, and shortness of breath. If you have these symptoms, you or a loved one should call your local health department immediately.
