Flu Vaccine Now Available for 2019-20 Season: Luxor Nursing and Rehab at Mills Pond Urges You to Get Yours!

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year.

The CDC urges everyone over 6 months of age to get the flu shot every year. The 2019-20 version of the flu vaccine is now available, so Luxor Nursing and Rehab at Mills Pond urges you to get yours done early, so you will be protected once flu activity picks up in the coming months.

How Soon Are You Protected After Receiving a Flu Vaccination?

Antibodies develop in the body about two weeks after the vaccination is given. This is another reason why getting your vaccine early is recommended.

What Flu Vaccinations Are Available?

There are different types of flu vaccinations – including egg-based, egg-free, high-dose, and live cultures. The CDC doesn’t recommend one type over the other, but they do give guidelines over which ones should be given to people of certain ages, conditions, or those who have allergies.

If you have any questions about whether you think you cannot receive a flu shot, check with your doctor.

Can the Flu Vaccine Give Me the Flu?

No, you cannot get the flu, even from a vaccination that contains live cultures. Some may confuse a mild fever and some aches that are general side effects of the vaccination with the flu, but it is certainly not the case.

Can I Still Get the Flu Even Though I Was Vaccinated?

Yes, but your risk is decreased dramatically, and if you do contract the flu virus, it generally isn’t as severe as it would be if you hadn’t received the vaccination. In addition, seniors and people with compromised immune systems may develop less immunity from the vaccination. The CDC reports that during the 2016-17 flu season, vaccination prevented an estimated 5.3 million flu illnesses and 85,000 estimated hospitalizations due to the flu.
